Non-Executive Director

The VDS is not just a mutual veterinary society that cares about the professionalism and wellbeing of its members, it is also a modern and efficient insurance company authorised by the Prudential Regulation Authority and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority and the Prudential Regulation Authority.

The Board is responsible for the long-term success of VDS. Its role is to provide leadership and oversight, within a framework of prudent and effective controls, which enables risk to be assessed and managed. The Board sets the values, standards and strategy and ensures that the necessary financial and human resources are in place to meet those objectives.

The VDS is seeking to appoint a business-focused, veterinary surgeon as a Non-Executive Director who will assist in driving an appropriate culture to deliver fair treatment of members. The chosen candidate will be an experienced and successful veterinary surgeon and a member of VDS with a strong personal commitment to the Society’s ethos and aims.

The appointment is subject to approval by the Financial Conduct Authority and the Prudential Regulatory Authority and a vote by the Society’s membership at the Annual General Meeting.

Non-Executive Directors attend Board meetings every other month and other meetings as appropriate. Meetings are held in Knutsford, Cheshire and the majority at the Society’s Head Office. There will be an overall time commitment of 25 days (or equivalent) per year. The post is remunerated.

The successful applicant will need to demonstrate:

  • Several years’ experience in veterinary practice or industry
  • Considerable knowledge of the range of working environments within the profession
  • Insight into how the VDS might best meet members’ diverse professional indemnity insurance and support requirements.
  • Experience of chairing committees or leading a team.
  • The ability to think strategically
  • Financial and commercial experience
  • The ability to provide constructive challenge and work as an effective member of the Board
  • Significant experience gained at or near main board level or experience at a senior and accountable level in business management in an organisation of significant size
  • An appreciation of a highly regulated organisation, operating in the financial services industry and the ability and willingness to develop the appropriate level of knowledge and understanding.
